First European Ex-libris Congress, Kufstein, Austria,
7-9 August, 1953

It was the graphic designer Harald Pickert who took the initiative to launch the first international congress. The Austrian Bookplate Society presented a jubilee exhibition called “50 Years of Austrian Bookplates” and Dr. Hans Ankwicz-Kleehoven delivered a lecture on this subject. Further lectures were given by Georg von Stawa (“Old Tyrolian Bookplates”), Hans Ankwicz-Kleehoven (“Bookplates of Viennese Humanists”), Daniel Meyer (“Heraldry and Bookplates”), Gilray Veth (“Dutch Bookplates”) and Hans Heeren (“Karl Blossfeld”). The variety of lectures with speakers from different countries indicates the broad interest offered by the congress; one evening was reserved for exchanges between collectors. Sixty-three people took part, from seven countries, which is a huge number if you think of all the limitations of travel existing at the time.
