Yaroslavl history in brief
In 1010 Prince Yaroslav the Wise ordered to build a wooden
fortress on a picturesque hill washed by the rivers Volga and
Kotorosl.
That fairy-tale structure was destined to become the first stone, as it were, in
building of one the most beautiful cities in the heart of Russia, which is now
called Yaroslavl. The city boasts both the glorious past and the great present.
The local
fine churches, museums, unique businesses, educational establishments, and also
memorable places connected with the life and activity of outstanding
representatives of Russian science and culture make the city a center of
attraction for many tourists, especially those who are interested in Russian
history.
Stone-based construction began there in 1215. These days you can
still savour the true Russian architecture masterpieces of the distant past, such
as the Saviour-Transfiguration Cathedral, Christmas Church, Ilia the Prophet
Church, Saviour in the City Church, Nikola the Chopped Church, etc.
It was Yaroslavl where Feodor Volkov opened the very first professional theatre in Russia.
In a monastery located within the Saviour-Transfiguration
Cathedral site, A.I. Mussin-Pushkin found the
priceless manuscript of the Tale
of Igor’s Regiment. The museum specially dedicated to this fine example of old
Russian literature is known the world over.
